- 1. Introduction
-
- Word Translator Can:
- * look up foreign words on your computer
- * save time in writing letters, reports, memos and facsimile
- * help you study for quizzes and tests
- * speed up your homework
- * help you improve your language skills
-
- Word Translator is a pop-up electronic bilingual dictionary.
- It can translate words from one language to another with just
- a few key strokes. Word Translator will happily work inside
- your favorite word processor. It will translate words from
- one language much faster than you can flip the pages of your
- dictionary.
-
- Word Translator - shareware version is fully functionally
- equivalent to the end user version. There are however two
- extra things that registered users receive: 1) language modules
- with significantly greater number of words in them and 2) for
- certain language modules there is a very useful grammar help
- file (for DOS version only). To see the latest language modules
- that we offer please see the "invoice.doc" file.
-
- 2. System Requirements
-
- * IBM - PC/XT/AT, or compatible computer, DOS 2.0 or greater
- * Microsoft Windows 3.0 or greater
- * A hard drive with at least 2.5 MB of free space
- * For users of the Russian language module the program
- "UKeyFix" is required from XenoTechnix Inc., 3412 Progress
- Drive, Bensalem, PA 19020, USA, tel: (+1) 215-639-2996,
- fax: (+1) 215-639-2932.
-
- 3. Installation
-
- a) First Make a Backup
- Insert the disk labeled "Word Translator" into drive a:.
- Insert a blank, formatted disk into drive b:. Type copy
- a:*.* b: <return>. Label the previously blank disk "Word
- Translator" and store the original disk in a safe place.
-
- b) Installation Procedure
-
- NOTE: a hard disk is required for installation.
-
- 1) Insert the disk labeled "Word Translator" into drive a:
- or b: drive.
- 2) Change your current drive to be the one you just inserted
- the disk labelled "Word Translator" into (e.g. b:
- <return>).
- 3) Type install <return>.
- 4) Just follow the installation instructions.
-
-

-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- c) Questions that you will be asked during the installation
- procedure
-
- 1) "Please enter your source drive (a: or b:)" - this is the
- drive that you just inserted the disk labelled "Word
- Translator" into. It can be either a: or b: drive.
- 2) "Please enter your destination drive:" - this is the drive
- where you wish to install Word Translator software into.
- It can be any letter of the alphabet as long as you have
- previously defined such a drive in MS-DOS.
-
- 3) "Do you have any more Word Translator disks? (y/n)" - some
- users might purchase more than one language module or might
- purchase one of the large language modules both of which
- cannot fit on a single disk. If you have been sent more than
- one installation disk then you should answer with 'y' here
- and then you should insert the next installation disk into
- your 'source_drive'.
-
- 4) "Do you want to define a new user dictionary? (y/n)" - some
- users might want to define their own specialized dictionaries
- for various purposes. This is the right opportunity to do so.
- You should enter the name (eight or less characters long
- without the extension) by which you want to call your
- specialized dictionary.
-
-
- 4. How to Call Word Translator
-
- a) From StartUp Program Group
-
- You can copy the Word Translator icon into the StartUp
- program group and that will ensure that Word Translator
- is started every time you run Windows. The Word Translator
- icon is copied to the StartUp program group by copying
- the destination_drive\wintran\wt.exe by means of File
- Manager. Double click on the Word Translator icon in order
- to run Word Translator. For more information on StartUp
- program group and information on how to copy files please
- refer to your Microsoft Windows user's guide.
-
- b) From Word Translator Program Group
-
- You should create a new program group inside of Program
- Manager and name it Word Translator. Now you should copy
- the file destination_drive\wintran\wt.exe into the newly
- created program group. Alternatively you can just copy
- the file destination_drive\wintran\wt.exe into any
- program group that you like. Double click on the Word
- Translator icon in order to run Word Translator. For more
- information on how to create a new program group and
- information on how to copy files please refer to your
- Microsoft Windows user's guide.

- 5. Buttons
-
- Each button has a specific function that it performs. If the
- button has dark colored letters inside of it than it can be
- activated to perform its function otherwise it cannot do
- anything. The function that each button performs is displayed
- in the "Message" box whenever you place the mouse cursor above
- the button.
-
-
- 6. Translation
-
-
- a) Translating a Word or Phrase
-
- 1) First select the word or phrase (i.e. highlight the word
- or phrase).
- 2) Then click with the mouse on Edit in your word processor.
- 3) Now click on Copy.
- 4) Press the "Ctrl" and "Shift" keys simultaneously.
- 5) Select the word or phrase that you want to translate
- and then click on Choose.
- 6) Select the translated word or phrase and then click on
- Choose.
- 7) Click with the mouse on Edit and then click on Paste in
- your word processor.
-
-
- b) Typing Your Own Word or Phrase
-
- 1) Press the "Ctrl" and "Shift" keys simultaneously.
- 2) Click in the top most box in the current window in order
- to be able to change the word displayed there.
- 3) Start typing a word or phrase to translate. As you type
- Word Translator will automatically try to guess what
- you want to type in the box underneath the one that you
- are typing in.
- 4) When you are done typing select the word or phrase that
- you want to translate and then click on the Choose
- button.
- 5) Select the translated word or phrase and then click on
- the Choose button.
- 6) Click with the mouse on Edit and then click on Paste in
- your word processor.
-
-
- 7. Adding More Translations
-
- a) For a word or phrase not in the dictionary
-
- If you have entered a word or phrase that is not in the current
- bilingual dictionary module then you may add this word or phrase
- and its corresponding translations into Word Translator. To do
- this simply click on the Add button and a new window will come
-
- ____________________________________________________________
- page 3
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- up. The top most box in this new window cannot be edited and
- will display the word or phrase that you want to add. In the
- box underneath you may type different translations for the word
- or phrase that you are adding. Once you have finished tying a
- single translation press <return> for the translation to shoe up
- in the list of translations. You may at any point in time delete
- a translation that you have just added (be careful when
- deleting). When you are done click on the Done button to save the
- newly added word or phrase and its corresponding translations.
-
-
- b) For a word or phrase already in the dictionary
-
- The same procedure as described above should be followed. The
- only difference will be that when the window for adding new
- translations comes up there will already be a set of translations
- in the list of translations.
-
-
-
- 8. Deleting Translations
-
- After you have clicked on the Choose button in the first Word
- Translator window you will be in the window where you can
- choose translations. In this window there is a Delete button.
- If you select any translation in the list of translations and
- then click on the Delete button the selected translation will
- be deleted from the list of translations. Be careful not to
- delete something that you still need.
-
-
-
- 9. Setup Menu
-
- The Setup window can be called in two ways:
-
- 1) by clicking on the system button (top left corner of
- Word Translator windows) and then clicking on Setup
-
- or
-
- 2) by pressing the "Alt" and "Ctrl" keys simultaneously.
-
- Once the Setup window is displayed you will be able to change
- the following:
-
- 1) Current Language - current language module (e.g.
- English-Spanish-English, English-Russian-English, etc.)
-
- 2) Selected font - the font in which the word or phrase
- and its corresponding translations are displayed in.
- For more information see 5).
-

-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- 3) Convert between ANSI and OEM character layouts - this
- option should be always chosen except for fonts that
- display the Russian characters and those fonts that
- contain OEM characters. For all practical purposes leave
- this option on unless you are using a Cyrillic font.
-
- 4) Hot key name - here you can choose to change either the
- Word Translator hot key or the Setup hot key. Unless
- the default hot keys interfere with other Windows
- applications that you are using you should leave the hot
- keys unchanged. Otherwise to change the hot keys you
- should change the first and second hot keys in their
- list boxes.
-
- 5) Choose font - Russian language module users will have to
- choose a Russian font before Word Translator will be able
- to display the Russian characters. UkeyFix is required
- software in order to be able to use Cyrillic characters
- with Word Translator. UkeyFix is available from
- XenoTechnix Inc., 3412 Progress Drive, Bensalem, PA 19020,
- USA, tel: (+1) 215-639-2996, fax: (+1) 215-639-2932.
-
-
- 10. Russian Language
-
- In order to use the Russian language module you must have an
- additional program called "UkeyFix" available from XenoTechnix
- Inc., 3412 Progress Drive, Bensalem, PA 19020, USA,
- tel: (+1) 215-639-2996, fax: (+1) 215-639-2932.
-
- Before starting to use the Russian language module you should
- do the following:
-
- 1) Call Word Translator (please refer to section "4. How to
- Call Word Translator" in this manual).
-
- 2) Press the "Alt" and "Ctrl" keys simultaneously in order
- to get the Setup window.
-
- 3) Change the Setup so that it contains the following #
- settings:
-
- Current Language = English-Russian-English
-
- Selected Font = UCourier (or a better Cyrillic font)
-
- Convert between ANSI and OEM character layouts = OFF
-
- 4) Now you can use Word Translator in the same way as with
- any other language (i.e. the rest of the text in the
- manual now becomes meaningful to users of the Russian
- language module).

- 12. MS-DOS Version
-
- We also have a MS-DOS version of Word Translator. The DOS
- version has more features being that its evolution started four
- years before the evolution of the Microsoft Windows version of
- Word Translator. The DOS version is faster because it does not
- have the Windows overhead and because it runs in text mode. The
- drawback of the DOS version is that some word processors are
- known to be incompatible with Word Translator for DOS. This is
- not the case for the Windows version. The Windows version will
- work with all applications that run under Microsoft Windows
- (although for users of Cyrillic language fonts in Windows there
- are some applications that have a little problem).

-
- Please note that some of the sample sessions might be invalid
- for certain language modules because they lack the required
- word/ phrase and its corresponding translations. The Spanish
- language module was used throughout the tutorial. The same
- instructions are valid for other language modules also. We
- will lead you step by step through a few sample sessions of
- using Word Translator for Microsoft Windows. Before any
- session make sure that these three steps have been taken:
-
- I) Follow the instructions on how to call Word Translator
- (section "4. How to Call Word Translator).
-
- II) Call the Setup menu and choose the correct language
- module. (For Russian please refer to section "10. Russian
- Language").
-
- III) Call your word processor or any other Windows application.
